Who can apply?
Any Australian citizen or permanent resident with a degree from a recognised university who graduated in 2008 or 2009 can apply.
What do you look for in a Graduate?
Previous successful applicants have had a high academic record, good problem solving and research skills, good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work both autonomously and in a team work environment.
Are you looking for people with specific degrees?
No. WA Health recruits a mixture of talented graduates from a broad range of non clinical disciplines. Previous graduates’ degrees include Health Science, Science, Arts, Commerce, Communications, Social Work, Psychology, Law and Economics.
How many positions are available?
There will be up to 10 positions available in 2010.
How many people usually apply?
A few hundred applicants usually apply.
When does the 2010 Graduate Program commence?
The GDP will commence in late January/early February.
What training is provided?
The Department of Health GDP includes structured training which can include job interview skills, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, report writing, writing ministerials, time management and on the job learning and professional development activities including regular performance management and coaching and mentoring.
What if I am graduating part way through the Graduate Program?
Applicants must have graduated in 2008 or 2009. Applicants graduating part way through the Graduate Program are encouraged to apply for the 2011 GDP.
What if I graduated before 2008?
Only applicants who have graduated in 2008 or are graduating in 2009 can apply.
When do applications open and close?
Applicants will open in late July/early August and will close in late August.
What happens at the end of the Graduate Program?
The 2010 graduates may be offered a permanent Level 3 PSA or Level 4 HSU position pending their successful completion of the program, should these positions be available.
What kind of placement rotations can I expect?
Previous graduates have worked in areas including human resources, workforce planning, finance, policy development, indigenous health, health promotion, health reform, mental health, corporate shared services, epidemiology, public affairs, organisational development, social work, performance and reporting, allied health and safety and quality.
Will I be required to conduct a Criminal Record Screening?
Yes. Candidates who are offered positions for the 2010 GDP will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check. Previous criminal conviction or pending charges will not necessarily preclude employment.
When will you be making offers to the successful applicants?
Offers to successful applicants will occur at the end of September and early October.
What is the duration of the Graduate program?
The GDP is a 12 month program.
How long has the Graduate Program been running?
The Health GDP has been running since 2004.
What is the starting salary in 2010?
Graduates will be paid a starting salary at a HSU Level 3 plus 9 per cent superannuation. The current HSU Level 3 range is $49,733 – $54,545 pa.
